Presentation
The memory consultation is intended for anyone with memory problems. For our patients over 65, it is an integral part of the Centre des Toises' psychiatry and psychotherapy service for the elderly. Progressive memory disorders are known as dementias, and differ from normal age-related difficulties.
Dementia occurs when cognitive functions such as memory, language or task planning are affected, with repercussions for everyday life. When the individual, his or her family or both become aware of the problem, it becomes necessary to detect it by means of tests.
It's important not to trivialize complaints, and to discuss them with your doctor.
The different forms of dementia
There are several forms of dementia, often presenting in mixed forms, such as Alzheimer's disease associated with vascular disease:
- Alzheimer's disease
in 60% of cases - Lewy body dementia
- Vascular dementia
- Frontotemporal dementia(FTD)
